Build your skills, confidence and independence
We will get to know you, understand what matters to you and help you work towards your goals. Depending on your starting point and aspirations, these goals may include:
- becoming more independent
- communicating and building relationships
- taking part in your community
- progressing to another college course
- preparing for work or supported employment
- developing skills for adult life
Learning that is planned around you
Your programme will be based on your strengths, support needs, interests and future goals.
If you have an Education, Health and Care plan, often shortened to an EHC plan, we will consider the outcomes and support set out in it. We will work with you, your parents or carers, your local authority and other professionals involved in your support.
You may work towards personalised learning goals, recognised qualifications or both. This will depend on your programme and individual assessment.
We offer 3 broad pathways. They can overlap, so you may develop skills from more than one pathway.

This pathway supports you to develop communication, choice-making, personal and social skills, and greater independence.

When you will attend
Supported Studies programmes usually run from September to June.
Students attend on 4 days each week. The current information says teaching takes place from 10am to 3pm, with arrival from 9:30am to support transport arrangements. Your timetable and non-attendance day will be confirmed before you start.
Places and the consultation process
Places are considered through a consultation process with the student’s local authority. We assess whether we can meet each student’s education and support needs and identify an appropriate programme.
A consultation is not an application for a particular pathway. We use the information supplied by the local authority, alongside our assessment, to consider the most suitable programme.
For questions about an EHC plan consultation, email:
EHCPconsultation@barnetsouthgate.ac.uk
You can also speak to your local authority SEND adviser.
Frequently asked questions
Supported Studies is for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including students with learning disabilities and complex support needs.
We offer personalised programmes that help you build skills, confidence and independence while working towards your individual goals.
Most students join Supported Studies through an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan consultation.
Your local authority sends information to us and we review whether we can meet your educational and support needs. We then work with you, your parents or carers, and your local authority to identify the most appropriate programme.
