Work experience and placements
Get experience. Build connections. Prepare for your future.
At Barnet and Southgate College, learning for your future goes beyond the classroom.
Through work experience, industry placements, employer projects, mentoring and industry visits, we help you understand what working in your chosen sector is really like. You can put your skills into practice, learn from professionals and start building the experience and connections that can support your next step.
Whether you are preparing for your first job, considering further study or exploring where your skills could take you, our aim is to give you meaningful opportunities to engage with the world of work.
Real experience with employers
We work with employers and organisations to create opportunities that connect learning with industry.
Depending on your course and the opportunities available, this could include:
- work experience and industry placements
- visits to workplaces and live project sites
- projects and briefs set by employers
- mentoring with industry professionals
- networking and employer events
- online workshops and Q&A sessions
- opportunities to develop professional and leadership skills
These experiences can help you understand employer expectations, develop your confidence and see how the skills you learn at College are used in real workplaces.
Connecting your course with industry
Our employer partnerships are opening up experiences across a wide range of sectors.
Construction students, for example, have visited live projects with Farrans Construction, including visits to Midgard and MYCO.
Within healthcare, work is continuing to expand NHS placement opportunities for students studying Digital, Laboratory Science and Adult Nursing T Levels.
Students interested in music and the creative industries have also worked with MilkBoy The Studio in Philadelphia on an employer-led project to develop an Electronic Press Kit. The brief includes original music, photography, artwork and artist branding, supported by live online workshops and Q&A sessions with industry professionals.
This means industry experience does not always have to be limited by geography. Employer-led projects can give you the opportunity to collaborate with professionals and respond to real industry expectations.
Creating opportunities for every learner
We want more students to be able to benefit from meaningful workplace experience.
Our Supported Internship programme has secured nine placements this year, supporting learners to gain experience in the workplace and progress towards employment.
Propel 2 Elevate is supporting 25 students this academic year and is expanding into Engineering, General Construction and Electrical pathways. Opportunities being developed include employer mentoring, networking, executive board engagement and work experience.
We are also growing opportunities within specialist areas. A further eight architecture placements have been secured, with an ambition to reach 35 placements for Level 3 students across the programme by the end of the academic year.
From experience to employment
Work experience is about more than adding something to your CV. The right experience can help you discover where your strengths lie, meet people working in your chosen sector and understand what employers expect.
For some students, those connections can lead directly to their next opportunity.
Student success: Kadija
Kadija, a T Level Laboratory Science graduate, secured employment with the UCLH Pharmacy Team following connections established through the Mason Foundation/UCLH partnership.
Her progression is a strong example of how employer relationships can help create a pathway from College into the workplace.
Industry experience without borders
The MilkBoy The Studio collaboration gives students the chance to work on an industry brief while engaging directly with professionals in the US music sector.
Through regular live workshops and industry-led projects, students are gaining invaluable experience with one of the most respected music production studios on the East Coast of the United States.
