Course Overview
The one-year Access to Radiography course at Barnet and Southgate College is expressly designed for adult students without A Levels who wish to study Science at a higher level. If you are keen to progress to either university or vocational training this course is ideal for you. Learners will need to follow a work-shadowing placement. As a placement is essential to developing your basic knowledge and practical skills, the College will provide an introductory letter to help with this process.
Access programmes are specifically designed to prepare mature students to enter higher education. They help develop the skills and knowledge needed to successfully complete a degree course or diploma in higher education. Those who do not have relevant Maths and English qualifications will be considered for a place on an alternative Level 2 Pre-Access to Science programme with GCSE English and maths and Level 2 science units. This will then enable those applicants to progress to Access to Science the following academic year.
Get career-ready while you study
From CV workshops and interview preparation to work placements and employer projects, you’ll develop the skills and experience employers value alongside your course.
Entry Requirements
We welcome students who are 19 years of age and over, are good communicators with numerical skills, are interested in science and have a desire for a Science-based career. As this is a very demanding course, it is essential that applicants are highly motivated to go on to further studies and that they possess excellent study skills. Successful candidates will need to have a grade C (4/5) or above in GCSE English and maths. They will also have to pass a numeracy and literacy assessment set at GCSE (Level 2) standard.

What this course covers
Access is an intensive course, so you do need to be committed to hard work and are required to maintain 100% attendance. In order to manage strict work deadlines, you are expected to self-study for a minimum of 10 extra hours a week and must be able to cope with the workload. The Access to HE Diploma in Radiography is composed of the following subjects’ areas: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Study Skills. Tutorial content is broken down into units and assessed continuously. Tutorials support the students’ progress, particularly during their application into Higher Education.
A variety of methods are used to assess knowledge and understanding; these include short tests, practical write-ups, essays or short-structured questions and exam units at the end of the course. Learners will need to gain 60 credits (45 credits graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, and 15 ungraded credits) in order to complete the course and achieve the full qualification.
You will achieve the nationally recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma (Radiography) awarded by OCN London.
Fees and funding
During your course there may be some additional costs for essential books and stationery, including a lab coat for practical sessions
Progression
Learners would be expected to progress onto degree courses in Applied Biology, Diagnostic Radiography, Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging, Forensic Science, Physics and Radiotherapy and Oncology and a range of other related HE courses
