This course is designed for learners aged 16-19 who want to develop the knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in the carpentry and joinery industry. It is suitable for those starting a career in Site Carpentry or Architectural Joinery, those wishing to retrain, or individuals looking to progress into an apprenticeship or employment within the construction sector. The qualification has been developed in partnership with employers to prepare learners for entry into the occupation.

What qualifications or experience do I need?
There are no formal occupational experience requirements. Applicants should: · Have a keen interest in carpentry and joinery. · Demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy. · Be willing to undertake both practical workshop activities and classroom-based learning. An initial assessment may be used to ensure the course is appropriate for your experience and learning needs.
What will I study ?
You will develop the technical knowledge and practical skills required to work safely and effectively in the wood occupations industry, including: · Health, safety and welfare in construction. · Construction technology and building methods. · Principles of carpentry and joinery. · Measuring, marking out and interpreting drawings. · Safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools. · Setting out, cutting, assembling and fixing timber components. · Site Carpentry or Architectural Joinery practical skills. · Sustainability, communication and professional behaviours expected within the construction industry.
How will I be assessed ?
Assessment is through a combination of: · Online multiple-choice knowledge tests.· Practical workshop assignments. · Synoptic practical assessments. · Observation of practical skills. · Completion of assignment tasks demonstrating knowledge and competence
What qualifications could I achieve ?
Successful learners will achieve the: City & Guilds Level 2 Extended Technical Occupational Entry in Wood Occupations (Diploma) (7255-62) This is a nationally recognised Level 2 qualification aligned to the Carpentry and Joinery occupational standard.
Will I need an interview ?
Yes. Applicants will normally attend an interview or initial assessment to discuss their previous qualifications, experience and career goals.
Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?
Learners will normally need to provide: · Safety boots and appropriate workwear/PPE. · Writing materials and a tape measure. · Materials or examination fees where these are not covered by funding. Your college will advise you before the course starts if any additional costs apply.
