The UAL Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media is designed to provide learners with a foundational introduction to creative practice across a range of art and design disciplines. The course supports learners who are motivated by practical, hands-on learning and wish to develop confidence, creativity and core skills within a supportive and structured environment.
Learners will explore a variety of materials, techniques and processes while developing an understanding of both historical and contemporary art and design practice. The qualification encourages experimentation, risk-taking and reflection, enabling learners to build a portfolio of work that demonstrates their creative development and readiness for progression.

What qualifications or experience do I need?
You will need a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above, including English and Maths. A strong interest in art, design, and architecture is essential. A portfolio of creative work may be requested.
What will I study ?
Learners will complete a series of mandatory units that introduce key skills and concepts in art, design and media. These typically include:
Introduction to materials, processes and skills in art, design and media
Contextual research and exploration of artists and designers
Communication skills within creative practice
Solving 2D creative problems
Solving 3D creative problems
Solving time-based creative problems
Final Art, Design and Media project
Projects are practical and skills-based, allowing learners to work across areas such as drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, photography and digital design.
How will I be assessed ?
Assessment is project-based and includes Practical assignments Sketchbooks and design portfolios Research and written reflections A Final Major Project responding to a set brief There are no formal exams; all work is internally assessed and externally moderated by UAL Awarding Body.
What qualifications could I achieve ?
On successful completion, you will achieve the UAL Level 1 Diploma in Art & Design. This can lead to progression onto: UAL Level 2 Diploma Art & Media courses.
