Thousands of students across the UK received their results in A and AS levels today, including those at Barnet and Southgate College
Over 180 students were given their A2, A- level results, many of them exceeding their own expectations. The results were of an exceptional standard with a marked increase in the higher grade passes with the majority of students achieving their first or second choice university places.
The state-of-the-art A Level centre of excellence opened nine years ago at the £50m Wood Street Campus in High Barnet. This year 100% A- level pass rates were achieved in eleven subjects including: Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, English Language & Literature, Film Studies, History, Psychology and Photography. Successful students said the results were down to small class sizes, the style of teaching and the excellent facilities.
Students such as Vishwa Patel, aged 19 from Edmonton who received an A in Biology, an A in Chemistry and a C in Mathematics.
Vishwa said: “I’m so pleased I’ve actually got the grades and got my first choice university place at Queen Mary College in London, where I’ll be studying Biomedical Science. Barnet and Southgate College has been the best atmosphere for me. And I’ve really enjoyed it; it’s been a mixture of working hard and balancing the social side of things, and the highlight has definitely been getting my results today. In the future I’d like to continue with a Master’s degree and then go onto work as a research scientist, or maybe go into medicine.”
Alex Robertson, aged 19 from Enfield was pleased to get an A in Business Studies a B in History and a B in Sociology.
Alex said: “I’m so pleased. I’ve really enjoyed my time at College. They really helped me settle in as I came here from school after completing my first year of A levels and I had only got a C and two E's, hardly enough for my university of choice. However, I turned things around at Barnet and Southgate College and got an A and 2 B’s, so I’m off to study Sports Journalism at Brighton University. The teaching has been really good and I’ve made some great friends.”
Finally, Emily Caesar, aged 19 from Whetstone was chuffed to receive an A star in Sociology a B in English Literature and an A in Law.
Emily said: “I'm originally from the USA but my mum moved here when I was younger and I stayed. I’m now off to City University London to study for a degree in Law. My time at College has been thoroughly enjoyable, ironically I first came to Barnet and Southgate College for an interview with my best friend and I liked it so much I enrolled as well with her! The teaching has been so good and I liked being treated like an adult. I wanted to stay in London for my A levels and University so I’m pleased with my results and place at City University, but one day I think I’ll go back to the USA.”
Barnet and Southgate College Principal, David Byrne said: “Barnet and Southgate College has achieved some impressive results this year with 100% A-level pass rates in eleven subjects, which is testament to the hard work and dedication of our students. They should all be very proud of their achievements, some are going onto study at prestigious universities, some will be staying on at College for their Higher Education and a number of them will be taking up apprenticeships or going straight into the workplace.
However, not every student will have done as well as they had hoped and we’ll be able to offer support and guidance on what to do next and in most cases be able to offer them a suitable course to follow. If anyone’s unsure what to do next they can come in and see us at all College campuses for further advice and enrolment throughout the summer.”
