College launches classic car apprenticeships

To close the events of National Apprenticeship Week 2017, Barnet and Southgate College held a Classic Car Show on Sunday 12 March

The event launched the College’s brand new historic car apprenticeships, which are enrolling now and start later this year. Whitewebbs Transport Museum, the Jaguar Drivers Club, The 96 Club, Waterloo Classics, The Mean Old Timers Classic Car & Motorcycle Club and the Studio 434 private collection all participated in Sunday’s show which hosted an impressive variety of classic cars, with many guests and enthusiasts bringing along their own cars to add to the display.

The College’s Historic Vehicle Restoration Apprenticeship Programme has been designed in conjunction with The International Guild of Specialist Engineers (TIGOSE) and in response to the current UK skills gap; where a significant number of employers report a widening technical skills and training gap in this field. The programme aims to specifically develop technician apprentices from across the UK to equip them with the highest level of traditional skills and practical ability within the Vehicle Restoration industry. The College will offer two apprenticeship training routes (level 2 and 3) into the historic vehicle industry, both accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

Kevin Haggarthy, Head of Motor Industry Liaison and Motor Sport at Barnet and Southgate College said: “We’re excited to launch the specialist apprenticeships, as they fill a technical gap in the market. The UK classic car industry is worth over £5.5BN and the Coutts Index for passion investments indicates that classic car investments continue to out-perform all else, with a staggering 40% increase in prices last year alone. This is a growing market that will enable those taking up the new apprenticeship programme to earn a wage whilst they gain the relevant skills for the jobs that are currently out there.”
