Employers and Employment

Overview

Everything that the College does revolves around the needs of employers and the employment prospects of our learners. Barnet and Southgate College courses and the businesses they serve are so closely matched that we see them as two sides of the same coin

Employers and leading industry figures input into all aspects of what we do. We aim to go beyond being simply ‘up-to-date’ and produce College leavers who are ready for the future world of work as well as training that responds to tomorrow’s business needs.

Highly Employable Learners

Employers are involved in designing courses, running modules, kitting out our equipment, offering work placements and partnering with us to provide Apprenticeships. We continue to increase the hours dedicated to delivering employability support and training both through our expert tutors and in partnership with our in-house recruitment agency which is part of the REED group.

It’s an increasingly competitive arena, and we attract some of the brightest people in the country to our College. Latest statistics indicate that College leavers are more prepared for work than school leavers of the same age and that a College education such as an Apprenticeship can be as lucrative over a lifetime’s earning as having a University degree.  [1]

Supporting employers and local businesses

We play a vital role in the economies of the London Boroughs of Barnet and Enfield, particularly in addressing skills shortages and helping them hire the right staff. However, there is even greater scope for employers to partner with us at the College. Employers in the two boroughs fare quite poorly on a national scale in providing training to staff (just 58% in Barnet and Enfield 64%) and Barnet has one of the lowest rates for employers recruiting education leavers in the country.[2] Hundreds of local employers are working with us and our learners to fill skills gaps and train and motivate their current workforce.
