Access to Higher Education Social Work Diploma is a well-established, national qualification which allows students without traditional Level 3 qualifications to apply and progress to university for pathways in social work and related professions. If you are a mature student (over 19 years of age) and wish to attain a career in social work, social care, youth work, youth justice, housing, psychology, sociology, criminology or similar, this is the ideal route for you.

We welcome applicants who are 19 years of age or over, and have GCSE Grade C or above or Functional Skills Level 2 in English. Maths is also desired, however, 19+ applicants who have not attained GCSE or Functional Skills at Level 2 in Maths, but who are able to demonstrate Level 2 skills for Maths on a BKSB online test during the interview process, will also be considered for the Access to Higher Education Social Work programme. Evidence of paid or voluntary employment within the health and social care sector is beneficial and will support your application.

This course has an intensive study programme; you must be completely committed to hard work and you will be required to maintain 100% attendance. You are expected to self-study for a minimum of 10 extra hours per week in order to manage strict work deadlines. The Access to Higher Education Social Work includes the following subject areas: study skills, sociology, psychology, interpersonal skills, safeguarding children and social work practice.

A number of methods will be used to assess your knowledge and understanding. In order to achieve the full qualification the learner will be assessed using one or a combination of the following: Essays, classwork and projects. The learner will require 60 credits (a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 and 15 credits at Level 2).

Access programmes are specifically designed to prepare mature students to enter higher education. They will help to develop the skills and knowledge required to successfully complete a degree course or diploma in higher education. This will offer the opportunity to progress to Access to Higher Education Nursing the following academic year.
