Access to HE Diploma (Midwifery) is a well-established, national qualification which allows students without traditional Level 3 qualifications to apply and enter university. Access to Midwifery course runs over one year and is ideal for students wishing to progress to university, to study on degree courses in midwifery or other health related courses. The aim of this qualification is to develop learners' necessary knowledge and skills in order to be able to progress onto university. Therefore, in addition to entry requirements highlighted below, all successful candidates are expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and passion for midwifery or other health-related subjects.
We welcome applicants who are 19 years old or over and have a grade C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2 in English. Maths is also desired, however, 19 + applicants who do not have GCSE or Functional Skills at Level 2 in maths, but who are able to demonstrate level 2 skills for Maths on a BKSB online test during the interview process, will also be considered for the Access to Nursing programme. Evidence of paid or voluntary employment within the health and social care sector in an area that you wish to pursue as a career is beneficial and will support your application.
Access is an intensive study programme; you must be completely committed to hard work and you are required to maintain 100% attendance. You are expected to self-study for a minimum of 10 extra hours a week in order to manage strict work deadlines and to cope with the work load. The Access to HE Diploma (Midwifery) is composed of the following subject areas: Mandatory Units Study Skills Human Biology Midwifery Specific Units
A wide range of assessment methods will be used to assess the knowledge and understanding. The assessment methods may include one or a combination of essays, classwork, projects and exams. In order to be able to achieve the full qualification, the learner will need to gain 60 credits (a minimum of 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2).

Yes, all candidates will be interviewed. In addition to successful interview, all learners must demonstrate Literacy and Numeracy skills at Level 2. This assessment will take place in the form of online test on the day of the interview. Please note that each candidate will be asked to provide evidence of their English qualification on the day of the interview, this evidence should be in the form of certificates or relevant transcripts (Maths is desired but not essential).

Access programmes are specifically designed to prepare mature students to enter higher education. They help to develop the skills and knowledge needed to successfully complete a degree course or diploma in higher education. Those who do not have relevant Maths and English qualifications will be offered a place on an alternative level 2 programme with Maths and English components. This will then enable these applicants to progress to Access the following academic year.
