This course is designed for those who have a Level 2 teaching assistant/childcare qualification and wish to progress onto studying at Level 3. This qualification will provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in school environments. It includes learning about children and young people's development, safeguarding their welfare and communication and professional relationships.

You should be volunteering or working in a school (Foundation Stage, Key Stages 1-4) for a minimum of 12 hours per week. No specific qualifications are required, but your literacy and understanding of childcare will be assessed. You should have good IT skills - you will be able to access the College website and submit your assignments online. Normally, you will have completed a Level 2 qualification or have considerable experience of work within a school setting. DBS checks are required.

You will achieve 11 mandatory units, totalling 32 credits, plus 12 credits from a group of 38 optional units, to achieve the Diploma. Of the 44 credits required to achieve the Diploma, 40 of them must be at or above the level of the qualification (Level 3). You will attend College one day per week and will be in placement two days a week (12 hrs). This could be on a voluntary or paid basis, if you are in a suitable school setting.

Assessment is by portfolio of work including direct observations by an assessor, reflective accounts, tasks set by CACHE (the Awarding Body) and written and pictorial information.
