This course is for 16-19 year olds who have a passion for sport. They need to have an interest in the theoretical content of sport science as well as having aptitude and ability in a particular sport. Having a high sporting level in at least one sport as a performer and/or coach is thus important.
General Qualifications: For 3 A-Level subjects you require between 5 and 6 GCSEs grade A*-C (8/9-4/5) in academic subjects, taken at one sitting. Specifically for PE you need a B grade/grade 5 in both GCSE English Language and Maths. Also B grade in Physical Education at GCSE or a Distinction level in the BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport
Subjects to be studied will include: 1. Applied anatomy and physiology; 2. Skill acquisition; 3. Sport and society; 4. Exercise physiology; 5. Biomechanical movement; 6. Sport psychology; 7. Sport and society and the role of technology in physical activity and sport. Plus: practical performance in physical activity and sport.
Assessment will be 70 % and 30% non-examined assessment. The examination will take place at the end of the second year. There will be numerous assessment opportunities throughout the two years to prepare students for the year two exam including an end of year mock exam in year one.
On successful completion of the course you will achieve an A Level in Physical Education. With this, students can access a wide range of career and higher education pathways and progress to university courses such as sports science, physiotherapy, recreation and leisure studies, sport psychology, teaching, sports therapy, journalism, coaching.
