This course will be an enormous benefit for students who are planning to take a degree such as engineering, sciences, computing, finance/economics, etc., or perhaps mathematics itself. It is a challenging qualification, which extends and deepens knowledge and understanding beyond the A Level Mathematics syllabus; however, students who do it often say it is their favourite subject.
General Qualifications: For 3 A Level subjects you require between 5 and 6 GCSEs grade A*-C (8/9-4/5) in academic subjects, taken at one sitting. Specifically for A level Further Mathematics you need a grade A or A* (old grading system), or grade 7 and above in GCSE Mathematics (new grading system).
Compulsory content will include proof, complex numbers, matrices, further algebra and functions, further calculus and vectors, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, differential equations as well as 2 optional units which will be specified later.
Assessment by public examinations at the end of the second year (6 hours in total). You will be assessed continuously during the course and at the end of the first year you must passed the mock exam to be able to progress to second year.
On successful completion of the course you will achieve an AS Level in Further Mathematics. Further Maths is an academic AS Level which is desirable for many courses at universities, especially degrees in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, economics and finance. A Level Further Mathematics can be acceptable for other courses like architecture, medicine, pharmacy, and science related courses.
