Teacher Training programmes are more in demand; as all new teachers in Further Education must gain a Licence to Practice.
We offer a range of courses for those looking to start a career as a teacher with the post-16 sector. You can take an introductory course, preparing you for a teaching career. There are also specific qualifications available for those wishing to teach English.
PTLLS – Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Level 3/4
Who is this course for?
The PTTLS Course is for committed adults who wish to teach post 16 year olds and adults in further education and training organisations. It is available to both employed trainers or instructors and those wishing to develop and expand their current roles.
What qualifications or experience do I need?
You need to demonstrate the equivalent of GCSE levels in literacy, working towards A Level standards. You need to hold a level 3/A Level qualification in the subject you wish to teach. However, no prior teaching/training experience is required.
What will I study?

The course consists of:
• Two assignments
• Thirty reading hours

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through Assignment work, a practical session and a personal development journal.
What qualifications could I achieve?
Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector Level 3.
What can the course lead to?
PTLLS is a nationally recognised Edexcel qualification, which is the first stage in teacher training and can lead towards a full Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (also known as a PGCE - Post-compulsory). PTLLS is also a qualification much favoured by private sector trainers.

What will I learn?
This is an in-service course for teachers in the post-compulsory sector who wish to become fully qualified. It is a Level 5 qualification which provides the knowledge and skills demanded of teachers in this sector. The Diploma confers licensed practitioner status or QTLS.
The course is run in partnership with the Institute of Education at the University of London and is accredited by SVUK. It runs over 2 years on a part time basis. Year 1 is delivered at Barnet and Southgate College and year 2 at the Institute of Education in Bedford Way, London.
How will I be taught and assessed?
The course is assessed through a combination of written assignments, micro-teaching sessions, and lesson observations. Candidates will be observed in their workplaces by their personal mentors and by the course tutors.
What qualifications do I need?
Candidates are required to have an academic qualification to Level 3 in the subject that they are teaching, as well as Level 2 or equivalent skills in English, Numeracy and ICT. You will also need to be teaching in the post- compulsory sector for a minimum of 4 hours a week, in an established institution that is inspected by recognised bodies.
To enrol on the course candidates must apply through UKPASS online applications. They will be interviewed by the IoE and by Barnet and Southgate College.

What will I learn?
This is an in-service Additional Diploma course for numeracy teachers in the post-compulsory sector who wish to become fully qualified as numeracy teachers. The course is run in partnership with LLU+ at
London South Bank University
and is accredited by SVUK.
How will I be taught and assessed?
The course runs over one year on a part time basis. This is a Level 5 course. It is assessed through a combination of written assignments, peer presentations, and lesson observations. There will be at least 4 observations totalling 4 hours, usually in the candidate’s own employment setting. The observations should all be in numeracy lessons.
What qualifications do I need?
The course requires candidates to teach numeracy for 75 hours over the year, in an established institution that is inspected by recognised bodies. Their teaching should cover at least two levels of the Skills for Life curriculum (Entry / Level 1 / Level 2).
To enrol on the course, candidates must apply to Barnet and Southgate College and will be interviewed. Candidates are required to show Level 3 skills in mathematics and will usually be expected to possess a generic teaching qualification.
